Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located on the Pacific coast, with Washington to the north, California to the south, Nevada on the southeast and Idaho to the east. The Columbia and Snake rivers delineate much of Oregon`s northern and eastern boundaries, respectively. The area was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before the arrival of traders, explorers, and settlers who formed an autonomous government in Oregon Country in 1843. The Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.
Billings, the county seat, is the state`s largest city with an estimated population of 105,845 (2009) and is a major retail and wholesale trade, financial, energy, transportation and medical center. According to the Montana Almanac, by authors Andrea Merrill and Judy Jacobson, the county was established in 1883. The Yellowstone River, the authors say, was called by early French trappers, Roche Jaune for "yellow rock."Pompeys Pillar, an area landmark, was originally called Pompy`s Tower by Captain William Clark. The authors add he named it after Sacajawea`s son Baptiste, whom he called "Little Pomp." Billings was named for lawyer, philanthropist and former Northern Pacific Railroad President Frederick Billings.
The Public Utility Commission is an independent, three-member, quasi-judicial commission that regulates the siting of electric and natural gas infrastructure and supervises the rates, quality of service, and overall financial management of Vermont`s public utilities: electric, gas, energy efficiency, telecommunications, cable television (terms of service only, not rates), water and large wastewater companies.
Alaska, northwest of Canada, is the largest and most sparsely populated U.S. state.
