Austin, -based Texas-Charter-Schools-Association Promoted Christine Nishimura as General Counsel
The Texas Charter Schools Association advances student achievement through its comprehensive support of effective public charter schools in Texas. Representing nearly 90 percent of Texas public charter school students, TCSA has the trusted and expert resources for educators and leaders, parents and families, charter hopefuls, legislators, members of the media and more. Charter schools are free, open-enrollment public schools that have the flexibility to adapt to the educational needs of individual students. They are held to stricter academic and financial standards than traditional public schools, because Texas` charters can be revoked after three strikes of unmet ratings. More than 200,000 students attend public charter schools in Texas, but there are more than 105,000 students on waitlists to attend a charter school. There is about a $1,000 per-student funding gap for Texas charter schools, because they do not receive facilities funding, unlike traditional public schools. With equitable funding, quality charters could replicate and grow the number of seats available to serve more families in need. To change this inequity, we need all supporters to raise their voice and get involved.
Christine Nishimura is General Counsel at Texas Charter Schools Association. Previously, Christine held various senior legal leadership roles in the industry.
