The Lottery was created by a ballot measure, Proposition 37, which was approved by 58 percent of voters on Nov. 6, 1984. The Lottery Act gave the Lottery a clear mission: to provide supplemental funding for public schools and colleges. The Lottery is operated and administered by a Commission appointed by the Governor.
The mission of the Office of State Examiner, Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service, is to administer an effective, cost-efficient civil service system based on merit, efficiency, fitness, and length of service, consistent with the law and professional standards, for fire fighters and police officers in all municipalities in the State having populations of not less than 7,000 nor more than 500,000 inhabitants to which the law applies, and in all parish fire departments and fire protection districts regardless of population, in order to provide a continuity in quality of law enforcement and fire protection for the citizens of the State in rural and urban areas.

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) administers California`s sales and use, fuel, tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis taxes, as well as a variety of other taxes and fees that fund specific state programs. CDTFA-administered programs account for over 25 percent of all state revenue. California`s essential services, such as public safety, transportation, health, libraries, schools, social services, and natural resource management programs, are directly supported by these taxes and fees.
