About the Person

Dorothy Kathryn Robinson, Senior Counselor to the President, retired as Vice President and General Counsel of the University on October 1, 2014. She advises the President on institutional matters and is providing transitional support on legal affairs. As Yale`s chief legal officer and legal counselor to the Corporation from 1986 until her retirement from that post, she oversaw all of the University`s legal affairs, and directed its Office of the General Counsel. In addition, she was responsible for overseeing the University`s federal relations and its program of enterprise risk management. Ms. Robinson earned her B.A. with honors in economics at Swarthmore College, and her law degree at the University of California`s Berkeley Law School. Before coming to Yale in 1978, she practiced law with Hughes Hubbard and Reed in New York City. After arriving at Yale, she served as Associate General Counsel until she was named Deputy General Counsel in 1984 and Director of Federal Relations the following year; after her appointment as General Counsel, Ms. Robinson became the second woman Yale`s history to be named an officer of the Corporation, when she was appointed such in 1987. She became a vice president of the University in 1995. Ms. Robinson has served on the board of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. She has also served on numerous policy task forces and special committees of higher education associations, including task forces of the Association of American Universities and the Association of American Medical Centers on accountability in research and financial conflicts of interest. She served on the Committee on Management of University Intellectual Property under the auspices of the National Academies of Science`s Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy and its Committee on Science, Technology and the Law. Since 2007, Ms. Robinson has been a trustee of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, which, together with the College Retirement Equities Fund, is the nation`s leading provider of retirement plans for academia and the nonprofit sector. She has served as a board member of several local and community-based organizations, including the Hopkins School, the Connecticut Mental Health Center, and Friends of New Haven Legal Assistance. Ms. Robinson is a member of the bar of Connecticut, New York, California and various federal courts.
