Established in 1926 as part of the Tyler Public School System, Tyler Junior College gave residents of the Tyler area access to higher education. The college had a small student body during its early years. In the 1930s, as the country struggled through the Depression, only 200 students were enrolled. However, the prosperity of the 1940’s signaled major changes. In 1945, Tyler voters overwhelmingly approved a measure to create a junior college district and issued $500,000 in bonds for the College. The expansion of the College included new facilities and new full-time faculty members. Its growth came at an appropriate time for local residents and for many veterans who returned to Tyler to seek new opportunities and access to higher education. Tyler Junior College has continued to expand since its “rebirth” in the 1940’s. The Tyler Junior College District is now comprised of six independent school districts: Chapel Hill ISD*, Grand Saline ISD, Lindale ISD, Tyler ISD*, Van ISD* and Winona ISD. Today, after 86 years, Tyler Junior College offers more courses in any single major division than were offered in the entire curriculum in 1926. The College now has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students each semester. In addition, 20,000 individuals take continuing education courses each year.

St. John’s is home to the largest campus of Memorial University. Studying in the province’s capital city provides access to a wide range of degree programs and the city’s cultural and recreational offerings. The Marine Institute, also located in St. John’s, is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine education and applied research. Specialized programs and individualized learning are a strong basis for a professional education in the global oceans sector. Newfoundland’s west coast is home to the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University. With about 1,250 students, Grenfell Campus offers a personalized education with degree programs in liberal arts and sciences, with a focus on the fine arts and the environment. This small campus is set among jaw dropping natural beauty with outdoor adventures on its doorstep. Also in the western region in the coastal community of Norris Point is the Bonne Bay Marine Station. To the north, the Labrador Institute has locations in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador City and North West River. As Memorial University’s presence in the Big Land, the Institute leads projects and programs to expand the Labrador knowledge base. Memorial University’s teaching and learning opportunities extend beyond the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The ability to study in France is closer than imagined. Memorial University’s Programme Frecker provides the opportunity to experience French language and culture on the island of Saint-Pierre off the south coast of Newfoundland. In the United Kingdom, the Harlow Campus, nestled in the quaint town of Old Harlow, Essex, is a unique vantage point from which to study, research, and explore in the European Union. Moreover, Memorial University’s 450 distance education courses make it possible to extend your classroom beyond borders, enabling you to undertake academic exploration anywhere in the world.
