About the Company

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (also known as Rutgers University), is the largest institution for higher education in the state of New Jersey. It was originally chartered as Queen`s College in 1766 and is the eighth-oldest college in the United States. Rutgers is the largest university within New Jersey`s state university system, and it was ranked 54th in the world academically in a 2008 survey conducted by the Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The university offers more than 100 distinct bachelor, 100 master, and 80 doctoral and professional degree programs across 175 academic departments, 29 degree-granting schools and colleges, 16 of which offer graduate programs of study.

 

About the Person

Monica C. Barrett is a member of the senior leadership team, oversees all legal affairs for the University, and advises the governing boards and administration. Ms. Barrett has been practicing in the area of higher education law since 1990. Previously, she was employed as Executive Deputy General Counsel at the State University of New York, Associate General Counsel at Cornell University, and Assistant General Counsel at Barnard College. After serving as a law clerk for New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division Judge Sylvia B. Pressler, Ms. Barrett began her legal career as a litigation associate at Lowenstein Sandler in Roseland, N.J. Ms. Barrett has given a variety of conference presentations, including "Cyber-Bullying on the Quad," "Faculty Discipline: How to Get It Right When Faculty Get It Wrong," "Dealing with the Troubled and Troubling Employee," "ADA and Sec. 405: Handling the Emotionally or Mentally Unstable Employee," Psychiatric Disorders and the ADA: Up Close and Personal," and "New Realties in Sex Discrimination and Sexual Harassment." She is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, serving a term from 2012 to 2015. Ms. Barrett received a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A. in philosophy from Wellesley College.
