About the Person
Mr. Richard R. Grinnan has been General Counsel and Secretary of Markel Corp. since July 2014. Mr. Grinnan joined Markel Corp. in 2012 as an Assistant General Counsel. Mr. Grinnan served as Vice President and Corporate Secretary of Alpha Appalachia Holdings, Inc. (formerly Massey Energy Co.) since May 23, 2006. Mr. Grinnan served as an Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Secretary of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. Mr. Grinnan served as Senior Corporate Counsel of Alpha Appalachia Holdings from July 2004 to May 2006. Prior to Massey Energy, Mr. Grinnan served as Corporate and Securities Attorney at the Richmond law firm of McGuireWoods LLP from August 2000 to July 2004, practicing corporate and securities law. Mr. Grinnan holds a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia, an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business and a Law degree from the University of Virginia's School of Law.
