About the Person

Stephen Sigurdson is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Manulife Financial and is responsible for overseeing the Company’s worldwide law, compliance, internal audit and corporate secretary functions. He is a member of Manulife’s executive and management committees and the Chief Legal Officer for Manulife globally. Mr. Sigurdson joined Manulife in 2010 and until May 2014 was General Counsel Canada. In that role he oversaw law and compliance for Corporate and Canadian Divisions and also had responsibility for Canadian Division’s government and industry relations function. In 2011, he temporarily relocated to Hong Kong to serve as interim General Counsel for Asia in addition to his Canadian responsibilities. From September 2013 to May 2014, Mr. Sigurdson also served as Manulife’s Corporate Secretary. Prior to joining Manulife, Mr. Sigurdson was a partner of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP in Toronto where he had a number of roles including Chair of the Business Law Department and prior to that, a Managing Partner of the firm. While at Osler, he spent four years in New York as head of the firm’s office there. He also worked closely with Manulife as outside counsel during the Company’s acquisition of its business in Japan, one of the most significant transactions in Manulife’s modern history. Mr. Sigurdson holds an LL.B. from Queen’s University and a B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) from the University of Manitoba and is a member of the bars of Ontario and New York. He is a member of the campaign cabinet for the Toronto United Way and a former director of the Canadian Stage Company.
