Altana is a Montana financial cooperative, where citizens save together and pool their resources to provide loans that have built homes, purchased equipment for farmers, or financed someone's first car. The members of Altana help each other, while helping themselves. Altana Federal Credit Union (then Laurel Federal Credit Union) started in 1949 out of an empty railcar in Laurel, Montana. Several railroad workers joined together and started the credit union as a way to safeguard themselves from the high cost of banking services. The first loan given was to purchase a sewing machine. Altana has grown to offer seven locations, a wide range of products and services and a nationwide free ATM network. Altana serves residents throughout Yellowstone, Carbon, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Golden Valley, Wheatland and Musselshell counties in Montana. For over 80 years the people of our communities have been helping each other make dreams come true. In 1932, 11 El Paso civil servants pooled $5 each to form a credit union. Today GECU is the largest and one of the strongest locally-owned financial institutions in the city we call home with more than 340,000 members, 18 branches, and over $2 billion in assets. Becoming a GECU member is easy. You can join if you live or work in El Paso County, Hudspeth County or Doña Ana County not more than 25 miles from our 1500 North Resler Branch.
