The Vermont State Colleges - Castleton University, Community College of Vermont, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College, Vermont Technical College - are Vermont`s public higher education system. Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the first historically black college in the South. Shaw is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist Church. The University awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
