The University of Nevada, Reno seeks a Chief Information Officer (CIO) to provide executive leadership, vision, and expertise in all aspects of information technology and services. We seek an individual who embraces the challenges of supporting a Top Tier, Land Grant University that is growing both in terms of student enrollment and research capacity. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating the strategic vision, policies, and sourcing decisions necessary to achieve the ambitious goals of UNR while leading a team of IT professionals. The CIO has responsibility for centralized information technology services for the University and provides administrative oversight and day-to-day management of staff, facilities, services and budgets for reporting departments and managers, including: medical school IT unit, enterprise ERP, information security, application support, network services, virtualization, telecommunications, end-user services, and high-performance computing. The position reports to the Executive Vice President & Provost and is an active participant on the Academic Leadership Council. The University is interested in both private sector and higher education professionals that believe in the value of collaboration and are willing to talk across many disciplines in strategic planning and decision making. The University of Nevada, Reno has a statewide mission with major facilities separated by 500 miles.
The opportunities offered to the CIO at the University range from realizing a vision and strategic planning to operational oversight and project execution. The University is in the process of transitioning to a new computing model that separates and standardizes the infrastructure layer to provide common resources to both Academic and Administrative areas while at the same time allowing IT to provide better and more focused customer support to all areas of campus. This will include an on-premise cloud infrastructure. As part of this model we are expanding the use of Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) where it has been deemed appropriate and investing significant time and resources to modernize our collaboration and communication systems. The incumbent will have the opportunity to implement the final stages of the Student Information ERP application, steward an Electronic Medical Records system implementation at the medical school and to usher in the new Financial Services and Human Resource Services solutions. All of these improvements will drive our culture toward data-driven decision making.
UNR provides a unique information technology experience for the visionary CIO who seeks an institution that is large enough to procure and implement enterprise, next generation technology, yet still small enough for a single vision in how to manage and guide the projects to success.
Founded in 1874 as Nevada’s land-grant university, the University of Nevada, Reno today has more than 18,000 students and ranks in the Top Tier of best national research universities. Part of the Nevada System of Higher Education, the University has the system’s largest research program and is home to the state’s medical school.
