Key Biscayne operates under the Council-Manager form of government in accordance with its Charter. The streets were made this wide to accommodate the Santa Fe Trail which went down the main street, allowing the large oxen teams pulling covered wagons to make a "U -Turn". Santa Fe Avenue was laid with the red bricks in the 1920`s, and is still covered with bricks to this day. Every Friday and Saturday night you can see the local high school students cruising the main street.
