In 1956, the Legislature passed a bill creating DWR to plan, design, construct, and oversee the building of the nation`s largest state-built water development and conveyance system. Today, DWR protects, conserves, develops, and manages much of California`s water supply including the State Water Project which provides water for 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland Working with other agencies and the public, DWR develops strategic goals, and near-term and long-term actions to conserve, manage, develop, and sustain California`s watersheds, water resources, and management systems. DWR also works to prevent and respond to floods, droughts, and catastrophic events that would threaten public safety, water resources and management systems, the environment, and property. Balancing the State`s water needs with environmental protection remains a long-term challenge.
DFHV regulates the For-Hire Industry in the District of Columbia. The mission of the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is to protect public interest by regulating the vehicle-for-hire industry to allow the citizens and visitors of the District of Columbia to have safe, affordable, and accessible transportation options. The Department of For-Hire Vehicles provides licensing, adjudication, enforcement, and Lost and Found service for approximately 8,500 drivers, over 90 taxicab companies/associations, and over 600 of limousine operators, as well as DC residents and visitors who use public and private vehicle-for-hire in District of Columbia. The newly reorganized Department of For-Hire Vehicles is now aligned with the mission to regulate the vehicle-for-hire industry to allow the citizens and visitors of the District of Columbia to have safe, affordable and accessible transportation. Agency duties include regulating taxis, limousines, private vehicle operators, digital dispatch services, Payment Service Providers; and managing the relationships with equipment manufacturers and insurance companies. The office is restructured as follows: Office of the Director; Compliance & Enforcement; Regulatory Policy & Planning; Client Services; and Hearings & Conflict Resolution. The For-Hire Vehicle Advisory Council will advise the agency on the industry.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is an operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation and was created by the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 (49 U.S.C. 103, Section 3(e)(1)). The purpose of FRA is to: promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations; administer railroad assistance programs; conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy; provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service; and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities. Today, the FRA is one of ten agencies within the U.S. Department of Transportation concerned with intermodal transportation. It operates through seven divisions under the offices of the Administrator and Deputy Administrator.
