NCLEJ was founded in 1965, in the heyday of the civil rights movement. From the very start, NCLEJ staff joined with southern civil rights lawyers in landmark cases, worked with community-based organizations around the country, won ground-breaking victories in the courts, and achieved major reforms in legislation and agency policies and practices. Through these early successes, NCLEJ demonstrated that the law can be a powerful instrument for improving the lives of the most disadvantaged members of our society. For more than 50 years, NCLEJ has led the way in advancing economic justice across the country through class action litigation and policy advocacy; securing systemic reform in the delivery of income support and related human services; and safeguarding important legal and constitutional rights. NCLEJ`s staff of award-winning lawyers has many years of experience. NCLEJ multiplies the impact of its staff by collaborating with major law firms, as well as civil rights, civil liberties, women`s rights, immigrants` rights, and other legal advocacy organizations. NCLEJ is a leader in working collaboratively outside of litigation, both through formal and informal arrangements. NCLEJ staff excel at forging new partnerships by educating other advocates about emerging issues and advocacy strategies, presenting at conferences, convening groups of advocates over critical issues, disseminating publications widely, and expanding the use of its national listservs and website.
Sworn in on January 9, 2011, George Gascón became District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco. He is the first former Chief of Police to ever hold the position and the first Latino District Attorney in San Francisco`s history. Prior to being sworn in as District Attorney on January 9, 2011, George Gascón led the San Francisco Police Department, having assumed the position of Chief of Police on August 7, 2009. Previously, Mr. George Gascón was the Chief of Police for the Mesa Police Department in Arizona for three years.

The Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC), formerly known as the Center City Commission, is the organization charged with advancing Memphis and Shelby County by making Downtown Memphis a better place to work, live, learn, invest and visit. The DMC is an independent development agency that is not funded by City or County taxes. The DMC is primarily funded by a special assessment on commercial properties in the Central Business Improvement District (CBID), the area referred to as Downtown Memphis, and fees paid by private Downtown developers. All of Memphis and Shelby County benefit from the work done by the DMC, but citizens and property owners outside of Downtown do not contribute to the DMC`s operations or incentives. The DMC`s aim is to attract more people to Memphis and Shelby County with a vibrant Downtown that is densely populated, authentic, mixed-use, walkable, clean, safe and fun. The City of Memphis and Shelby County governments established the Downtown Memphis Commission to capitalize on Downtown`s role as the economic, cultural, and governmental heart of the city and county. The DMC is the official partnership between local government and the private business community in Downtown`s development.
Aransas County is located on the Gulf of Mexico and offers the relaxed, laid back quality of life of a coastal community. Local business includes environmentally friendly industries of seafood, oil production, tourism, sport hunting and fishing, boating and water sports, fine art and sculptures, and bird watching. The population is three-fold from local residents, summer vacationers and winter residents. The largest and fastest growing population is retirees relocating to the area; many of whom volunteer their time to over one hundred clubs and organizations in Aransas County. Available housing ranges from modest to ultra luxurious residences. Local governments are strong and creative, merging tax dollars on selected projects to reduce costs, merging services and bringing relief to taxpayers. Sport hunting and fishing exists hand-in-hand with fine art, while bird watching unfolds on nature`s coastal stage. While the second smallest county in the state, Aransas County has one of the fastest growing populations in Texas.
