Established in Groton in 1968 as Pfizer Employees Credit Union, the credit union has expanded from coast to coast and now provides banking services to more than 12,000 members through 4,550 affiliate branches, 28,000 no-fee ATMs, and 24/7 mobile banking. Altana is a Montana financial cooperative, where citizens save together and pool their resources to provide loans that have built homes, purchased equipment for farmers, or financed someone's first car. The members of Altana help each other, while helping themselves. Altana Federal Credit Union (then Laurel Federal Credit Union) started in 1949 out of an empty railcar in Laurel, Montana. Several railroad workers joined together and started the credit union as a way to safeguard themselves from the high cost of banking services. The first loan given was to purchase a sewing machine. Altana has grown to offer seven locations, a wide range of products and services and a nationwide free ATM network. Altana serves residents throughout Yellowstone, Carbon, Stillwater, Sweet Grass, Golden Valley, Wheatland and Musselshell counties in Montana.
